HISTORY OF THE CATALAN CARDIAC SURGERY
3.
Appearance of cardiac surgery centers in Barcelona As has already been mentioned, the birth of cardiac surgery in Catalonia took place outside the university, and the first cardiac surgeons were authentic pioneers, practically self-taught professionals. For this reason, at the beginning cardiac surgery was not practiced in specialized centers, but rather in the hospital where each surgeon worked. In the mid fifties the first specialized centers specifically dedicated to cardiac surgery appeared in Catalonia. Chronologically,
the first center specifically dedicated to this type of surgery was the Red
Cross Hospital of Barcelona, inaugurated in 1957; the second catalan
center which up took cardiac surgery was the Residencia Francisco
Franco, at present called Hospital Vall dHebron; the third
and most important during the sixties was the Centre Quirúrgic Sant
Jordi, inaugurated in 1962. Later
other centers for cardiac surgery were created such as the Hospital
Nostra Senyora del Mar, Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital de
la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. |
